Best Streaming Services

Watching your favorite movies and shows has never been easier with instant, online streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, HBO, and Amazon Prime. Believe it or not, it’s been two decades since the leader in on-demand media streaming service, Netflix, was founded. Now, there are dozens of services just like it that do just about the same thing—or do they? Let’s see how the competition stacks up.

Netflix

Netflix remains an industry leader in on-demand entertainment, and for good reason. A subscription to Netflix costs just $8 per month, and offers unlimited access to thousands of titles. Members can also register up to six different devices on their account, and be watching up to four movies and shows at a time, making it a great option for families. Netflix is known for its huge variety of titles, and has plans to grow their library even more. They’re rolling out a ton of Netflix Originals, and have plans to make half of their library comprised of Originals.

Hulu

Hulu is another great option for a streaming service if you’re craving your favorite cable TV shows but never have the time to catch them when they air. New episodes are added the day after they air, and current and previous seasons are available to stream as well. Like Netflix, Hulu costs $8 per month, but there’s one drawback—Hulu members still have to sit through frequent commercials. They may be shorter commercials, but they’re commercials nonetheless.

HBO

What does an HBO subscription get you? Well, if you’re already a paying customer of HBO from cable or satellite package, then you get HBO GO. For everyone else, there’s HBO NOW. Both streaming options give you access to the same titles you would be able to see on cable. The one main drawback to HBO’s streaming services is the price—at $14.99 per month, it’s the most expensive option so far. HBO also doesn’t offer the same breadth of variety that comes standard with other streaming services, because it’s limited by the content provided by the actual cable channel.

Amazon Prime Video

Amazon Prime members get to enjoy access to thousands of titles as part of their membership, though access to Amazon Video costs Prime members an additional $10.99 per month. They do offer a 30 day free trial which may be beneficial to members who aren’t sure how often they’d use the service. Like Netflix, Amazon offers their own Prime Original titles, and their library is expanding all the time. There is also a free section on the site as well, making it easily accessible for non-members.

Deciding between media streaming services seems difficult at first, but really, each service has its own purpose, pros, and cons. Interested in cable TV? Maybe HBO is for you. Want to watch older seasons of the Office? Netflix is calling your name. Already have a Prime membership? Try upgrading your membership to include Amazon Prime Video. Happy watching!

Babysitting Ideas/Activities/Tips

Stuck babysitting over the holidays and have no idea what to do? If you’re tired of the same movie-watching or video game-filled nights with the youngsters, then it’s time to come up with some more exciting babysitting activities while the ‘rents are gone. Here are some great ideas for babysitting fun:

  1.     Indoor kid-friendly yoga– Have the kids let off steam and clear their minds with a little yoga! Try simple, kid-friendly poses and lead a mini yoga class in the living room. See who can hold the pose the longest or just have some fun and see how flexible everyone can be!
  2.     Picnic– Have a picnic in the backyard or right in the living room! Have each child pick out their own recipe and bring it to the picnic. The recipes can be as simple as lemonade, sandwiches, or peanut butter crackers. Help the kids pack up plastic cutlery, plates, napkins, and anything else you might need. Once everything is assembled, take it to the picnic blanket and enjoy!
  3.     Make collages– Create something special that the kids can give to their parents. For this activity, everyone make a collage of their favorite things, people, or words. This is best suited for older children, as they’ll need to use scissors. Have everyone glue the collages together and then surprise Mom and Dad with the finished result! It’s a nice personalized gift from each child, and they’ll have fun making it, too.
  4.     Board games– It seems like when we were kids, board games were a go-to source of fun. Now, technology has taken precedence! Bring back the old favorites like Clue, Trouble, or Sorry! and see how the kids feel about our childhood favorites.
  5.     Fun with balloons– It may not be a good idea to play with a soccer ball in the house, but it’s usually a pretty safe bet to play with balloons! This should be done in an open area away from breakable items. Play soccer, relay games, or “keep it afloat” with the balloons. Use items from around the house to create makeshift games like bowling or kickball.
  6.     Have a spa day– Set up your own “salon” by offering fun hairstyles or painting nails. Treat the kids to a night of relaxation and fun in a way they’ve never had before!
  7.     Bake something– Most of us have fond memories of helping to bake cookies when we were kids. Why not try hosting a mini baking class yourself? You can have the kids form an assembly line and learn how to put the ingredients together, one by one. Not only is it a great learning opportunity, but the kids will squeal in excitement as they watch their creation come to life! (Plus, you get to eat whatever you make.)

Spending the night babysitting for another family doesn’t have to mean hours spent on the couch or in front of the TV. There are plenty of ways to have fun and keep the kids interested and busy! Just try any of these fun babysitting activities and see for yourself!

How to Shop For Someone You Don’t Know Well

With the holidays just around the corner, many gift-givers are scrambling to find the perfect gifts for family and friends. But what if the person you have to buy a gift for is someone you don’t know well? Sometimes, we need to pick out gifts for bosses, relatives, or kids, and we just get stuck. Whether you only see them a few times a year, you don’t know what their interests are, or you never see them outside of work, it can be hard to guess exactly what they’d like. Here are a few tips!

  1.     Get the inside scoop– Call around to family and friends (someone who knows the person best) to figure out what their interests are. Of course, this is especially helpful when buying for kids, who are always telling Mom and Dad exactly what they want! Don’t guess—it’s better to check with his or her parents before making a purchase. This way, you’ll avoid another person buying the same thing.
  2.     Drop hints in conversation– It may sound obvious, but sometimes simply bringing it up to the person can provide a huge help when it comes to gift ideas. You don’t have to outright ask what to buy, but you can ask questions like “Do you still like Maroon 5?” If the answer is yes, then maybe concert tickets are a great idea!
  3.     Rely on memory– This one is tricky because it there’s a risk that you remember incorrectly, but if done right, it can be a saving grace. Think back to a conversation you may have had with this person and try to remember if they mentioned liking a certain perfume, store, or hobby. You may be surprised at the clues you can uncover simply by looking back!
  4.     Pay attention– If you don’t have any past conversations to work off of, then simply start paying attention. Did they just run out of recipes in a favorite cookbook? Rip a hole in their favorite sweater? Complain about a broken phone charger? Most people appreciate having something they use often to be replaced or upgraded in some way. All you need to do is pay attention to what that “something” is!
  5.     When in doubt, go generic. Hey—it’s fine if you couldn’t guess an exact gift or item they needed this year. Going with a generic gift, like a candle, socks, sweets, or a mug, are always appreciated. After all, it’s the thought that counts!

Buying gifts for those we know is hard enough, but shopping for someone we barely know seems impossible! Don’t worry—it’s not as bad as you might think. Just pay attention to things mentioned in conversation, look for clues, and use a little creativity to get the ball rolling! Don’t be afraid to ask around, either. Not even Santa gets it right every time!

8 Reasons Why You Should Buy Local

Although most people prefer to buy their groceries, clothing, and other household items at big box stores like Wal-Mart and Target, shopping locally may actually be a smarter way to shop. Here are some ways shopping local can improve the community, complement your wallet, and make for a healthier lifestyle.

  1.  It builds community

Many don’t realize how much of an impact shopping locally has on the community as a whole. For example, any time someone shops for food at the local farmer’s market, they come in contact with the farmers who actually grow, harvest, and package the foods before they get to your table. Doing business with neighbors helps to build relationships and strengthen support within the community.

  1.  Economic benefits

For every dollar spent at a local business, the money returned to the local economy is three times more than a dollar spent at a chain! If you’re interested in strengthening your local economy, then think twice before you shop at a chain store.

  1.  Job creation

Part of having a strong economy comes from expanding opportunities for local entrepreneurs. Whenever you purchase locally, you are creating jobs by contributing to the economy of local businesses.

  1.  More value

Not only can you save more money by shopping locally, but you can also get more value for what you spend. The Consumers Union constantly shows that independent businesses beat their chain competitors in customer satisfaction.

  1.  Lower taxes

Who doesn’t like lower taxes? If you’re interested in lowering your taxes, then shop locally. Small businesses actually generate more tax revenue per sales dollar.

  1.  It’s green

Shopping locally has plenty of environmental advantages. Compared to chain stores, small businesses consume much less land and resources, cutting down on pollution and other environmental hazards. Also, since they’re located closer to residential areas, there’s much less air pollution and traffic.

  1.  Try it before you buy it

With Amazon becoming more popular by the day, it’s so easy to forget about the small businesses. So why go inside a local store when you can shop on Amazon? Because buying at a small business means that you can try it before you buy it!

  1. Health benefits

Farmers take pride in their products, and it shows. Buying foods from local farmer’s markets means the produce is actually fresher, and not loaded with a bunch of pesticides or preservatives.

If you’re about to head out the door to do some shopping, give your locally-owned shops a visit. Not only will you benefit from buying locally, but your neighborhood will benefit as well!

Things to Think About When Considering a Career Change

Things to Think About When Considering a Career Change

Many people consider changing careers during some point in their lives.  Maybe they’re not happy with the career they chose, or maybe they feel like there is no room for growth in their current field.  Either way, changing careers can be a daunting undertaking. If you’re currently not satisfied with your professional life, then you may want to consider a career change. If so, here are a few things to think about as you’re considering making your career move.

Do You Really Want to Change Careers?

Before you start searching into different careers, ask yourself if it’s just the employer that you’re not satisfied with, or is it really the career that you dislike.  If you actually enjoy what you do at work, then may be that the environment is not right for you.  If this is the case, then look into changing employers before you look into an entire career change.

Know Your Values

Before you decide on a career change, it is important to know what your values are.  Maybe you have been disconnected from your values which is causing you to be unsatisfied with your current job.  Ask yourself what you want out of your new career.  Are you interested in a career where you’ll be helping others?  Or would you rather have a career where there is more recognition?

Can Your Skills Be Transferred?

Changing careers can be intimidating and overwhelming if you are required to learn new skills.  You will need to ask yourself whether you have skills that you can transfer to another career.  For example, having experience as a manager opens doors to plenty of other careers.  If you have experience in sales, there are plenty of careers where your sales skills will be helpful.  Identifying your transferable skills is a good idea before you make that move.

Do You Mind Going Back to the Bottom?

Changing careers may mean that you will have to start at the bottom of the ladder again.  In order to move up in the ladder, you will have to develop and practice new skills that show your competency.

Is There Room for Growth?

Whether the career will allow you to grow is an important thing to consider.  It is important to know whether a career will hinder you from exploring new opportunities of developing professionally.  Having a career that allows you to advance is really important.  The last thing that anyone wants is to hit a dead-end in their career.

Will You Be Able to Support Your Lifestyle?

Before making a career move, you will want to consider the salary.  Will the salary be sufficient to cover your expenses and lifestyle?

What Companies Are You Interested In Working For?

Research the different companies that you would be interested in working for.  Find out what their missions are, and maybe even what their challenges are.  What skills can you offer them in order to help them overcome these challenges?  Also, what is the work environment like?

Who Can Help You?

Now is the time to reconnect and reach out to others.  Do you know of anyone that is currently in the same field you are interested in?  If so, reach out to them and ask them about their work.  Learn as much about the field as you can. This will give you a better idea of whether this career is for you.  Now is also the time to read through many industry articles to find out everything that you’d want to know about the field.

Now it’s time to gather all of your facts, and decide on whether or not you would like a career change. Take note of what exactly it is you’re unhappy with in your current career, and do your research on the career path you’d like to start. Consider things like salary, hierarchy, and a change in lifestyle if necessary. If you’ve considered all of these and still believe a career change is right for you, then it’s time to start job hunting!

Job Interview Tips To Get You The Job

Whether you’re actively searching for a job, are anticipating an interview in the near future, or you’re already preparing for an upcoming interview, then chances are you’ve come for help on how to nail it! It can be hard to know exactly how to ace an interview, especially if it’s your first time or you’ve been out of the game for a while. The key to acing that interview is to be adequately prepared. Here’s how to prepare for a job interview!

Anticipate possible questions. In the days leading up to the interview, try to anticipate the types of questions you may be asked. As a good rule of thumb, interviewers will usually as about your strengths and weaknesses, personality type, and what experience you have with certain tasks. They also may ask some circumstantial questions, such as to name a time when you had to deal with a difficult customer or problem-solve on the spot. Be prepared with answers and able to cite specific instances where you faced a challenge. It’s important to not simply recite your answers, as repeating them can come off as too rehearsed and stiff. Just have in mind some key points and let the conversation flow as it would normally.

Do your research: On interviewer, company, and position. If you can, try to find out who will be interviewing you so can prepare appropriately. Usually, you won’t be sitting down with the CEO, but you should know which manager or supervisor could be overseeing the interview. It’s a good idea to look up the person who will be interviewing you to get familiar with their background and establish any possible connections. Having an idea of their education or employment history can be a great help in starting a conversation, and it makes you appear prepared and knowledgeable.

Don’t forget to do research on the company, too. Know when the company started, why it started, what services or products they offer, and how they fit into the industry in the big picture. Know their competitors, any recent news in the company, and any other things you think you might be quizzed on during the interview. Then, research what exactly your position entails and who else you might be working with in the company. For example, do you work with a team of people or a solo role? Will you be reporting to a general manager or will somebody be reporting to you? Know the general hierarchy and obligations ahead of time and have the interviewer clarify anything you’re unsure of.

Night before: Get enough sleep, eat breakfast, drink water. This seem obvious, but you’d be surprised at how many people skip breakfast on that important day due to nerves. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water and allow yourself enough time in the morning for any surprises, such as a wrinkled shirt, spilled coffee, or unexpected traffic. Getting enough sleep the night before will also help you to be alert and awake the next morning. There’s nothing worse than yawning in an interview!

Dress to impress and arrive early. One of the biggest things that can make or break a candidate getting the job during an interview is how they’re dressed. We’re always taught to not judge a book by its cover, but unfortunately, in interview world, that’s pretty common. The way you dress can say a lot about a person, so make sure you dress appropriate to the job you’re applying for, or even dressed up a bit more. There are plenty of resources online that can help you determine exactly what type of outfit to wear.

Follow up. After the interview, it will be extremely important to follow up. Whether by email, phone call, or handwritten letter left with the front desk receptionist on the way out, it will be important to convey your excitement for the position and hopes to get the job.

These are all great tips to help you succeed and nail the interview. The most important thing is that you’re prepared, arrive looking and feeling your best, and are able to follow up with the interviewer afterwards.

Biggest Memes of 2017 So Far

The word meme is not only something that has become common in recent years, but a part of our society. For those that don’t know, according to Wikipedia a meme is an idea, behavior, or style that spreads from person to person within a culture. In the age of the internet and specifically social media memes have become more popular than ever before as people can share things with their thousands of friends with the click of a button. Complex recently ranked the top memes so far in 2017, below are a few of the headliners.

Salt Bae

You have probably seen some rendition of Salt Bae’s iconic pose throughout your travels on the internet. The story behind this meme is Turkish chef Nusret Gökçe made videos of himself cooking delicious foods in unique ways that quickly went viral. The most popular video was one of the beloved chef salting a piece of meat in a hilarious manner where the salt trickles down his arm on to the plate. The salt in this Salt Bae pose was changed to anything you could imagine and combined with a caption as it continued to sweep the web. Now months old, which in the meme world is decades, Salt Bae will still get a little bit of buzz when a new video is released or an opportunity to use his iconic pose presents itself.

Draymond Green/ Kevin Durant

This gif, or short video, went viral at the beginning of the year and has withstood the test of time. It is a short clip of Draymond Green grabbing at Kevin Durant’s, both NBA players on the Golden State Warriors, shirt and emphatically whispering something in his ear. In reality Green was giving Durant some words of encouragement, but the internet took it all kinds of different ways. You can only imagine what situations this sort of video has been used for. If you aren’t familiar with the meme here are some of the best.

Mocking Spongebob

This is a relatively recent meme but one that is already rising towards the top of the list of most popular memes ever. It is a picture of Spongebob with his hands on his hips and a hilarious facial expression that is combined with a sarcastic caption usually meant in a playful, mocking manner. There is no telling how someone dug up the picture that is from an episode of the show that aired years ago, but the internet is happy they did. People are so in love with this meme there have been stories of people getting tattoos of it! Needless to say this one doesn’t look like it is going anywhere any time soon.

Blinking Man

The last GIF highlighted on our list is the notorious blinking man. This is another short GIF that is a man giving a bewildering blink. His expression is one of shock and surprise that can be used in so many different situations. The man doing the blinking is someone who was watching someone play a video game and was shocked by something they said. The original video is actually a few years old but it just went viral at the beginning of 2017. This is evidence that anything can become a meme at any time, so who knows what will take over the internet next.

If you aren’t a frequent social media user you might not be too familiar with these memes, but their applications are endless. The creativity of people on the internet will never cease to amaze you, so next time you are looking to kill some time try doing a quick meme search on Google or Facebook.

New Apple Products Set To Release

Apple is always on the cutting edge of new technologies and the rest of 2017 will be no different. As with a lot of Apple products, what exactly they will be is largely still just rumors. The possibilities are endless, but below are a few of the bigger rumors swirling about what Apple has in store in the coming months.

HomePod

Smart speakers like Amazon’s Echo and Google Home were all the rage in 2016. It was one of the biggest gifts to buy all year and Amazon specifically saw tons of success from it, which made the invention of Apple’s own smart speaker an obvious move for Apple. The HomePod will be the first new product line that Apple has come out with since the release of the first Apple Watch in 2011. It will use the popular voice assistant found in iPhones, Siri. It will be capable of all the things the others are like telling you the weather, ordering food, and of course listening to music. The exact date that the HomePod will become available to the public is still not clear, but it will certainly be on the higher priced end of smart speakers. As with most Apple products, you are paying for the name and everything that comes with Apple like the advanced support. The speaker will be one of the most advanced on the market and is a good option if you don’t mind the increased price.

iPhone 8

This year’s iPhone release is expected to be one of the biggest of all time due to it being the 10th anniversary of the release of the first iPhone. Apple is expected to make some of the biggest changes and improvements it has ever made to the iPhone. Most of the info on the iPhone 8 is just rumors at this point, but they often end up being the way the phone is in the end. Edge to edge display could be the biggest change for the phone as it is rumored to do away with the home button on the phone. Apple has been looking for a way to increase image quality and make their products more water resistant and this would fall in line with those goals. The disappearance of the button would allow less opportunity for water to seep in and would provide a higher quality picture for users. It is also said that Apple will go back to the glass back that was last seen on the iPhone 4. As with the HomePod, the next iPhone is going to be very pricey and could even cost well over $1,000 for some models.

Apple TV

Apple TV is something that has really increased in popularity in recent years as cable packages became less and less popular. Streaming devices like Apple TV are beginning to take over the television market. The latest in TV tech is 4k ultra HD graphics, said to be by far the best picture quality ever created. Apple needed to adjust for this new technology so they will be releasing a new Apple TV device that will allow for it. If you already have an Apple TV and are looking to upgrade it would only make sense if your TV is also new and capable of 4k video, otherwise it does not look like this year’s Apple TV will have many new features.

New Macbook

Apple is also rumored to be releasing a new version of the Macbook computer at some point this year. It is said that the computer will focus less on things like battery life, weight, and portability and more on performance. This is likely because Apple realizes a lot of their users don’t have much need for an on-the-go laptop and could be more interested in a better performing computer. It will likely still have the same Apple Macbook look but could be a little bulkier and should be a lot more powerful. The new Macbook will be perfect for people looking for a computer to use for work no matter what they will be requiring it to do, which could be yet another reason Apple feels the change could be a good one.

Each year Apple amazes us with a new piece of technology or new device that is more shocking than the last. Just last year Apple released a new version of the Apple Watch that was capable of being fully submerged in hundreds of feet of water. Who knows what will end up being a part of their devices releasing this year, but if there is one thing we know for sure it is that they will be expensive!

Great Instagram Accounts To Follow

If you don’t have an Instagram it is a great idea to get one. It is a very unique social media platform due to the fact that it is mainly for sharing picture and video content. There is not nearly the amount of spam, ads, or unwanted opinions of those that you follow on Instagram. Below are some great accounts and types of accounts to follow on Instagram.

@humansofny

Humans of New York is one of the most inspirational and heart wrenching follows on Instagram. The account posts about people or groups of people found walking the streets of New York City. The backstory of the people in the picture, often a few paragraphs long, is attached. Some of the stories will make you laugh, some will make you think, some will make you cry. Brandon Stanton runs the Humans of New York account. He says that the accounts original purpose was just to compile a ton of pictures of random New Yorkers, but he began interviewing people somewhere along the way and stuck to it. Everyone has a story and in a massive city like New York you are going to hear some vastly different ones, which is part of what makes following @humansofny so rewarding.

Dogs and Cats

One of the best parts of Instagram is without a doubt the pets. You will quickly find that everyone loves to post a picture of their dog, cat, or whatever other pet they might have. In recent years people have even begun making their pets their own profile. Some of these pets even have millions of followers! It is great way to see all kinds of pictures of animals and it is clear people put a lot of time into creating those pictures. For dog lovers, try following @manny_the_frenchie (French Bulldog), @mensweardog (Shiba Inu), and @marutaro (Shiba Inu). These accounts all frequently post pictures of their dogs in hilarious and adorable situations. For cat lovers try following @PrincessMonsterTruck, @nala_cat, and @realgrumpycat. You have probably seen Real Grumpy Cat before as the cat has taken on a life of it’s own. The hilarious cat has been featured all over TV, in movies, and even has it’s own merchandise line! You wouldn’t believe some of the other pets that have their own Instagram accounts like Capybaras, snakes, and chinchillas, just to name a few.

“Meme” Accounts

Memes have become a huge part of our society in recent years, whether we realize it or not. A meme is basically anything that catches fire on the internet and is shared and talked about a lot. There are a ton of accounts on Instagram that are posting almost strictly popular memes. Depending on your sense of humor, they can get pretty out of hand and inappropriate. @girlwithnojob is on the more inappropriate side of these accounts but posts a lot of…interesting content. @miserable_men is another humorous account that is much more family appropriate. This account just posts pictures of men who aren’t having the best time, usually while shopping. Finally, @BuzzFeed posts all kinds of viral content a few times a day. BuzzFeed is already known as one of the best websites for all that is happening on the internet and social media and their Instagram account does not disappoint. If you are looking for a laugh the accounts above, or any other meme account, is a great place to start.

Instagram has become a place for news, entertainment, and just about anything else you can think of. If you don’t have an Instagram you should definitely think about making one and if you do you should definitely follow some of the accounts above!
